Hudson County Birth Certificate History
North Bergen is part of Hudson County. From 2004 to 2022, the state of New Jersey did not accept Hudson County birth certificates as valid proof of identity. A major corruption scandal led to questions about the integrity of vital records issued in the county during that time. This affected all 12 Hudson County towns, including North Bergen, Jersey City, and Hoboken.
As of 2022, this issue has been resolved. Birth certificates from North Bergen and other Hudson County towns are now fully accepted. If you were born in North Bergen during those years, your birth certificate is valid. You do not need to take any extra steps. The Hudson County Clerk can answer questions about the county's current status.
The state form REG-27A used to note that births in Hudson County between certain dates might need extra checks. That is no longer the case. Records from North Bergen are processed the same as records from any other part of New Jersey.
North Bergen Birth Record Fees
A certified copy costs $25. Each extra copy of the same record is $2 when you order them at the same time. These fees apply at the local North Bergen office and at the state level. Cash works for in-person visits. Mail orders need a check or money order.
VitalChek adds a service fee on top of the base $25. The total is higher, but the trade-off is speed and the option to use a credit card.
